Even asking for dowry - without any money changing hands - attracts 6 months to 2 years imprisonment.
If a woman dies under suspicious circumstances within 7 years of marriage and dowry harassment is shown, the offence carries 7 years to life imprisonment. Replaces IPC §304B.
Cruelty by a husband or his relatives - including harassment for dowry - is punishable with up to 3 years' imprisonment. Replaces the well-known IPC §498A.
