Nature of This Site

dowry.lol is a satirical public-awareness project. The calculator is satire, built to expose how dehumanising a practice that's been a crime since 1961 actually is.

Every number is made up. The multipliers, the base amounts, the final figure: all fictional, invented to make a point. They don't reflect actual demands from any real person or family.

Not Legal Advice

None of this is legal advice. The information about the Dowry Prohibition Act, BNS Sections 80 and 85, and related laws is here for awareness, not to substitute for a lawyer.

If you're dealing with an actual legal situation, talk to a qualified lawyer. Free legal aid is available:

Accuracy of Legal Information

We've tried to get the law right. The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 are real statutes and what we say about them is accurate as of the time of writing. But laws get amended and courts interpret them differently over time.

Don't rely solely on this site for legal decisions. Check India Code ↗ for the current text.

No Endorsement of Dowry

This site does not endorse dowry in any form. The calculator produces numbers that mirror how real negotiations work. That's the satire. Not endorsement.

What We Collect

Your calculator answers never leave your browser. Qualification, profession, salary, city and family standing are all computed on your device. None of it is transmitted, stored or logged.

We do measure traffic, using Google Analytics, so we can tell how many people reach the site and whether anyone reads the legal pages. Ad personalisation and Google signals are both switched off. There are no ads on this site and nothing is sold. The privacy notice sets out exactly what is collected and how to opt out.

The site also asks two optional, anonymous questions after a calculation. They have no free-text field and nothing that could identify you. Answering is voluntary and dismissing them costs nothing.

External Links

External links go to government portals and legal databases, for reference. We're not responsible for their content or whether they're still up.

Terms of Use

The rules for using this site, including what you may reproduce and the limits on our liability, are set out separately in the terms of use. What is collected about you is in the privacy notice.

Jurisdiction

This site is about Indian law, for an Indian audience. If you're in a different country, your legal situation will differ.
